This mini-album from South African band Kamikaze Test Pilots is one to definitely take an interest in. Six tracks and I don't think a bad one amongst them.
Opener 'The Inmates Have Taken Over The Asylum' hints at a definite Bad Brains style over a South African beat, the second track, 'Kenny Rogers (With A Shotgun)' - what a title!!! - is awesome; the funk metal groove wouldn't be out of place on a peak period Chili Peppers album, a la 'Blood Sugar...' or 'Mother's Milk'. This leads into more of the same in 'Chikken'.
The bass player is a bit useful, but the groove is so tight, the band all work well together. 'The Journey', when it explodes, could be Soundgarden, before it drops down into a funky groove which leads the track into a stunning guitar lead. 'The Drunk', again, could be Soundgarden but pinned down by Flea on bass; again, the guitar soloing is superb and what a funk rock groove!!!
And all this before an acoustic guitar-led final track, 'Better Way'. I have to say go out and buy this album. It struts its stuff well and took me by surprise. If these ever get a European tour count me in, it would be superb live.
