livingcolourcbgbvinyl300Recorded almost a decade ago at a live show in aid of an NYC institution about to be snuffed out for nothing but the benefit of commerce, - 'CBGB OMFUG Masters: August 19, 2005 The Bowery Collection' gets a vinyl release this month from MVD Audio, via Wienerworld in the UK.

Three tracks shorter than the compact disc version that was made available previously, this vinyl release houses nine songs recorded directly from the legendary venue's soundboard and captures a typically absorbing, if much rawer performance from Living Colour.

The band has some history with CBGB's too: the reunited band's first show after a five-year hiatus was at the club in December 2000, and in 2005 Sony released a live album recorded there in 1989 and titled, imaginatively, 'Live from CBGB's'. This release, then, the songs collected from the Save CBGB's show in August of 2005, further links the band to the venue and will make a fine addition to any vinyl collection.

You'll find a slightly looser than expected Living Colour ensconced in the grooves, but this is band that has a couple of weapons of mass musical destruction within its ranks: Corey Clover's voice breaks, surprisingly perhaps, at times throughout the performance, but his are pipes that I could listen to all day. Guitarist Vernon Reid hardly needs an introduction, six-string legend that he is, and his fretwork on this release is fat, funky and fuzzy at times, typified by the ending of 'Middle Man'.

From opener, 'Type', to closing track, the epic 'Cult Of Personality', this record's running time flies by.

I often revisit the back catalogue of Living Colour - mostly after hearing the gorgeous 'Love Rears Its Ugly Head' somewhere (and you'll find another worthy version here) - so to do it again now via this healthy slab of vinyl is something of a treat.
