Chazz Valentine - Gen YChazz Valentine, for those that don't know, is a prominent figure within the relatively untapped New Zealand music scene, best known for fronting kiwi punk bands The Rabble and, more recently, Flirting With Disaster

Now going it alone, Valentine releases his début solo album Generation Y. Crafted over 12 years with songs that just didn't fit with the previous bands, Valentine delivers an album full of honest, heartfelt songs about life, love and the day to day struggles of everyday life.

Valentine’s ability to craft the near perfect pop punk song that would quite easily make you forget that you are listening to a relative unknown. Strong hints of the likes of Rancid and Green Day shine throughout the entire album.

'Can't Make It Alone' opens the album with melodic guitars and lyrics telling the story of making it on your own and overcoming the doubters, 'Hook Line And Sinker' is another classic pop punk track reminiscent of early Green Day. With some of the darkest lyrics and possibly the catchiest chorus on the album, it will having you singing along in no time. 'The Brightest Star', as the story goes, was written for a friend’s wedding. The song itself wouldn't sound out of place on a Tim Armstrong record.

One thing you will notice is that ‘Generation Y’ is packed with various styles from punk to folk. Every track is written from the heart with personal tones throughout. It is clear to see that Valentine has a unique ability to carve out catchy melodies, and strong lyrics relevant to our generation. With today’s pop-punk scene being heavily dominated by overly produced American bands marketed towards pre-teens, ‘Generation Y’ is the breath of fresh air which is exactly what the scene needs today.

Had Valentine not been from New Zealand, I'm certain that this is a guy who would be rocking out venues in every major city worldwide. A definite one to watch for the future.

A must listen for fans of Green Day, Rancid and. Blink-182.
