Formed in 2008 from the still smouldering ashes of Midasuno and Martini Henry Rifles the E_I sound is all about bass, bass and more bass, as the trio features two bassists and a drummer. Having witnessed the band live back in October of last year (you can read that review here), it is reassuring to see that my standout cut of the night is also the lead track here. The eloquently titled 'Sex W/ Strangers', which still sounds like Mark E Smith jamming with Mondo Generator, but with the addition of Carl Bevan's (ex 60ft Dolls) production this track now sounds king size, and ready to destroy eardrums wherever its stomps.
Of the rest of the EP 'Chainsaw Song' is a fucked up piece of Gothabilly ready to single handily resurrect The Chicken Dance (god remember that?). 'Lights Out' meanwhile is sadly not E_I's cover of the UFO classic (I'd pay good money to hear that), but is in fact a just under two minutes 'scream until you like it' fuzzed out dose of musically transmitted disease. Which just leaves the EP's closing track 'Lay To Waste' to stagger out of your stereo doing just what the title says.
I can only imagine that Scott, Fudge and Thomas from E_I, must be flicking one massive "fuck you" middle finger at the world right now for having enough belief in their devoid of guitar musical vision, to create something as brutal and intense as the four tracks contained here. Fantastically OTT, and all the better for it.
Next time the Mail on Sunday does one of its "Ten Songs by Middle of The Road Fucko" free CDs, I'd love to see Exit International infiltrate the pressing plant and swap ten-track dullsville for this four track incendiary device. They could then simply stand back and watch the fireworks...Middle England really would never be the same again.... Now just hold that thought for a second.
