honestjohnlandslideuseWhen I heard Honest John Plain was going into the studio I was genuinely excited; more so when it was revealed that we were to get not one new album of songs from Mr Plain but also this release of older tunes recorded with Lester And The Landslide Ladies live in the studio.

When I put the disc in the player and cranked up the volume I was blown away by how good this record sounds. 'Monotony' hurtles out of the speakers and motors along with a crisp and clean sound that is just huge, with songs chosen from throughout Plain's career from The Boys to the Crybabys and all that is inbetween as well as one of Lester's best tunes thrown in for good measure. Honest John Plain is one of those songwriters who hits the nail on the head pretty much every time he picks up a guitar pick and turns up his amp and how the Boys weren't better known is one of those rock 'n' roll travesties......anyway, I digress.

Recorded in six hours live in the studio the energy is most certainly captured and one thing is for sure The Landslide Ladies are a great punk rock 'n' roll band and on this record they prove it with faultless renditions of tunes like 'Where Have All The Good Girls Gone' and 'This Is What We Want' as well as doing justice to the Boys classic 'TCP' - I could just reel off the tracks one at a time time to be fair, absolutely bristling with a lust for life and a passion for the song.

This album is nothing more than twelve songs of pure energy played by musicians who believe in what they are playing - 100%! - (it's just part of their DNA no doubt) and by the sounds of it are having an absolute blast as they knock out one after the other after the other. It must be said that in the past I'd struggled with certain things about Lester & The Landslide Ladies but I always gave their effort and direction praise and it was always plain to see they had rock 'n' fucking roll coursing through their veins and having a player and writer like Honest John Plain to direct them has paid off and 'Honest Alive!' is a case of cometh the hour cometh the man and if this was the first time I was hearing these songs on an original album it would currently be romping my record of the year no question about it.

I can't help but be a little envious of the Europeans who get to see these tunes bashed out live across the continent and would be there in a heartbeat if they decided to hop over the channel and put on a show or two for us limeys. If this album is a taster of what's to come on Honest John Plain's new studio album then I'm really excited. It is after all only rock 'n' roll but when it's written and played this well there is no better feeling than having your lug holes vibrated and caressed by songs as good as on this here album and I really do mean there is no greater feeling known to man. I guess what I'm trying to say is quite simply - buy this album. What is it they say about all killer and no filler? 'Honest Alive' is most definitely all killer. Long live rock 'n' fucking roll. I love my fucking job!
