San_fran_Vinyl_MainChristmas definitely came early in my household this year when Captain Oi finally unleashed their Cock Sparrer 180gm vinyl reissues (in conjunction with Pirates Press) at the start of the month.  Spanning the band's entire back catalogue and limited to 95 pieces for each title (the band all taking one each beforehand), the centrepiece of this campaign has to be this previously unreleased double live album from the band's second visit to San Francisco in just under a decade.

Captured on November 14th 2009 on the second of two sell out nights at the Great American Music Hall, this is Cock Sparrer promoting their then new album 'Here We Stand' Stateside, whilst also saying a huge "Thank You" to the record label making that happen (Pirates Press) by helping them celebrate their fifth birthday in true style.

Ok so let's start with what you actually get with this album first shall we, because not only is it a double live (gonzo) gatefold album pressed up on clear 180gm vinyl, but it also comes complete with a multi camera DVD of the same show (which you would pay good money for if it were for sale on its own), plus a silkscreen reproduction of the Ron Donovan designed event poster, as well as a huge full colour poster that captures photobooth snaps from the weekend's celebrations.  Now that is value for money in my book even if one of these baby's will set you back £25.

Coming almost two years after the band had launched 'Here We Stand' in the UK at a riotous gig in Wolverhampton's Civic Halls, the four sides of vinyl that make up this release captures perfectly the spirit and mood of a band on a high having released what they believe to be one of their best albums in their career (and who are we to argue eh?).  With the usual classics such as opening duo of  'Riot Squad' and 'Watch You Back' as well as 'Get A Rope' and 'Take Em All' littered throughout their set, you also get the chance to hear live versions of 'Here We Stand' tracks such as 'Sussed', 'Spirit of 76' and 'Suicide Girls' here for the very first time.

Over the years I think we've all grown accustomed to the fact that lead singer Colin McFaull is never shy in coming forward and declaring a Cock Sparrer gig "a party", and here he turns in a truly great vocal performance (even though someone has gone and drunk all his Jack Daniels).  But it isn't just Colin firing on all cylinders as this album captures the sound of Cock Sparrer on fire playing possibly one of their best live shows ever, and lucky for us then that it's been pressed up on lovely clear vinyl and DVD for us to be able to enjoy it again and again.

There is one small gripe I have and that is with only 95 copies available to buy right now, a download code would have been nice to help preserve the vinyl in its pristine condition, as this album will obviously become a collectors item in the future.  But that aside 'Back in San Francisco 2009' is a fitting live testimony to a band who just seem to go from strength to strength...and long may it continue when the music's this good.
