DSC00157It was 1980, and an album was released that Martin Haslam reckons genuinely changed his life. He was 13 years old. Thirty-six years later, and to our man, it still sounds as fresh and amazing as the first time he played it. So, how could we let him miss this opportunity to see it performed live for the final time in its entirety? Click the link to find out if the teenage angst has survived into middle age:

Trucker Diablo DRC 2Apparently it’s almost the time of year called Christmas. Or Coca-Cola-Mas as we call it ‘round here. Whatever you make of this festive period, it does herald one thing – the annual Trucker Diablo party at one of Über Rock’s favourite haunts, the Diamond in Ahoghill Rock City… Mark Ashby and The Dark Queen donned their finest party gear, boarded the beer bus and headed into the hills for this annual rock n roll hootenanny:

Tuesday, 20 December 2016 05:30

Kvelertak 1The first Saturday in December was a good night for rock n’ roll in Sheffield: at the other side of town, countless NWOBHM bands were reliving the good old days in the Academy for Hard Rock Hell’s ‘Xmas Rocka’... but Matt Bunting chose to venture to Corporation to see two of modern metal’s more exciting bands.  Click the link to find out what was thrown down:

The Posies / The President Lincoln – Bristol, The Louisiana – 30 October 2016 Print E-mail
Written by Rich Hobson
Friday, 16 December 2016 05:00

The Posies Bristol 1A little while back, Uber Rock’s Rich Hobson found himself at one of those gigs which, instead of the band playing out their stadium-filling potential rather “creates a special and personal relationship for fans, which in turn creates a sense of fierce pride in the band and their achievements”. It’s taken a while for our man to put his thoughts into words – well, he did move house in the interim – but you can click the link to find out what went down at what also turned out to be something of an UR family reunion:

Steve Harris British Lion / Wild Lies – Belfast, Limelight 1 – 6 December 2016 Print E-mail
Written by Mark Ashby and The Dark Queen
Saturday, 10 December 2016 16:00

31165608090 991633f3a8 oAs Mark Ashby wrote on his Facebook page on the afternoon of this gig, it’s not every day that you get to see a living legend, one of the founding fathers of heavy metal as we know it today, playing down your local pub… OK, it’s the rather more substantial club next door, but let’s not split hairs because there he was, on a cold Tuesday night in December, preparing to worship at the feet of the maestro that is Steve Harris, albeit not in his more generally recognized guise as the driving force behind the mighty Iron Maiden but as the leader of his side project, British Lion, on the last night of their European tour…

Midlands Metal Crusade VI – Wolverhampton, Slade Rooms – 26 November 2016 Print E-mail
Written by Rich Hobson
Friday, 09 December 2016 18:00

Evil ScarecrowBetween already-success stories, up-and-comers and soon-to-be kings, the Midlands Metal Crusade is the kind of event that offers music-lovers a perfect outlet to support the local scene at every level. It doesn’t hurt the event’s appeal at all that the organisers have managed to pull together a line-up which comprises many of the camps in the modern metal scene, ranging in everything from metalcore-inspired death metal to epic battle metal goodness and muscular alt rock. Our man Rich Hobson reports from this year’s sixth instalment of this extremely praiseworthy event:

levellersIn the second of our double whammy of live reviews today, Nev Brooks finds himself transported back to the dark days of Thatcherism and the miners’ strike, and a time when political activism charged the music of the day, as The Levellers perform their landmark ‘Levelling The Land’ in its entirety? Have they lost any of their angst and fury in this post-truth (fuck, we finally got to use the Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year!) era? Have they fuck, as you’ll find out when you click the link:

iseConsidering he was a huge Hellacopters fan back in the late 90s/early noughties, Jim Rowland did wonder to himself why tonight was the first time he had been to see Nicke Andersson’s Imperial State Electric. However, that was soon answered when he was reliably informed that this was only the second time the band have played London since they released their debut album back in 2010… click the link to find out what went down at this hotly anticipated return:

Conjuring Fate 1It seemed fated (sic)… and so it proved to be. Last In Line - Belfast 2Hometown gigs are always a bit special – especially when the artist concerned has had to move away, either to make their name in the wider world or just simply because of the demands of the craft they play. Prior to this show, Mark Ashby and The Dark Queen were pretty damn sure that Vivian Campbell could think of no better place in which to end Last In Line’s latest European tour than in the heart of his native Belfast.  Click the link to find out if this proved to be the case...
