The Dragonffli sigilDespite the many challenges which they face, independent venues are the lifeblood of the rock ‘n’ roll scene. Often run on shoestring budgets, by people who, like everyone here at Über Rock, are dedicated to the music for the love of the music, often pouring their own blood, sweat and tears – and money – into what they do in order to keep the flame alive and burning brightly.

As the Über Kingdom of Rock ‘n’f’n’ Roll prepares to mark Independent Venue Week, we kick off an occasional series of features in which we pay homage to some of the true heroes of the business – those who work at grassroots level, without the need for self-glorification or gratification, but merely the satisfaction that they are doing their little bit and doing what they do. But, let it be known that what they do is truly appreciated by true rock ‘n’ roll fans, such as your Über team.

And what better way to kick this series off than by hooking up with the man behind one of UR’s favourite venues, one which has been an integral part of the development of this site and brought to the fore many of the bands whom we have featured over the past eight years – and no doubt will continue to do so. So, show your horns, and your respect, as David O’Neill chats to Mr Dragonffli, Nick Byrne:
