A special fundraising gig is being held in one of Uber Rock’s favourite venues, The Doll’s House in Abertillery, as part of an ongoing campaign to save one of Wales’ landmark cultural venues, The Market Hall in Brynmawr.
The Market Hall houses Wales’ oldest, continuously running cinema and theatre, having opened in 1894. However, the venue was forced to close its doors in December, when Bleanau Gwent County Council placed a Prohibition Notice on the building, preventing its continued use until issues surrounding asbestos within its structure are addressed. The asbestos was discovered during structural investigations being carried out as part of plans to add a second screen to the cinema.
The Market Hall is run by the Market Hall Cinema and Arts Trust, a registered charity set up to manage the facility as an independent ‘first run’ cinema, theatre, venue and community training space. The charity reckons that the venue has been losing £95,000 a week, and, faced with dwindling cash reserves, has launched a crowdfunding appeal to help pay for the remedial work. The appeal has a target of £50,000.
