BIGELF to return with new album...and Mike Portnoy on drums! Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 April 2013 12:02

bigelfreturnsInsideOut Music is immensely pleased to announce the signing of progressive-rock powerhouse Bigelf for the release of their forthcoming new album later this year.

Label-head Thomas Waber says about the signing: "We have been talking to Bigelf for quite some time now and I am really pleased that we finally managed to make this happen! Bigelf are an excellent addition to the InsideOutMusic roster!"

It's been a few years since we've heard of any activity from the Bigelf camp, so who better to explain to us what's been going on in the meantime than Damon Fox himself:

"Finally! Bigelf lands on a planet whose atmosphere is synonymous with progressive rock and heavy metal. One of my all-time favourite quotes is, "Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid..."

I'm ecstatic that Inside Out/Century Media and Mike Portnoy have joined "forces" with Bigelf. First, I want to elaborate on what has been happening "inside" the band since 2010, there have been numerous rumours on the Internet that I fired everyone in Bigelf, this is completely untrue.

After the juggernaut of 'Cheat The Gallows' came to a halt, the business and personal infrastructure of Bigelf imploded and an unexpected hiatus occurred leaving the band in complete disarray. A myriad of personal, financial and domestic matters had enveloped myself as well as certain members of the group. There also comes a time when deep down inside it just doesn't feel right anymore, and one has to face the music that the end is near. Transparency no longer exists and with that, clarity and perspective are lost. I'm speaking for myself now but clearly this was a mutual feeling and I believe it was obvious amongst the band. Subsequently, Ace Mark decided to move on and left Bigelf in the summer of 2011, and a request by the remaining members for a dissolution of business followed. To put it simply, we went our separate ways without malice.

I had been keeping in close touch with Mike Portnoy after his very public and difficult departure from Dream Theater. At this time, my musical future seemed quite bleak and I was very vocal to Mike about not being able to sustain the band any longer on my own. He implored me to carry on and to not let Bigelf slip away, his encouragement and enthusiasm meant the world to me. Recognizing that I needed some new allies, I asked him if he would help fight the good fight and lend his extraordinary drum majesty to the new Bigelf record and he readily agreed. Also...sharing a passion for all things rock & roll, my good friend Duffy Snowhill climbed aboard the Viking ship for another round of thundering bass guitar and for that too I am grateful.

I also want to acknowledge our amazing and dedicated fans that send emails all the time saying how they feel about Bigelf. These emails inspire me greatly and they're the reason that I continue to play this kind of music, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I can't wait for everyone to hear the new wondrous landscapes we've been sculpting, there are lots of surprises around the corner, stay tuned.

ANDREW W.K. confirmed as new frontman for MARKY RAMONE'S BLITZKRIEG Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 April 2013 11:59

Andrewwkmarkyramoe500

Andrew W.K. will be joining Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg as the lead singer for their 2013 world tour.

The punk drumming icon and his band will be fronted by the king of partying for a high-octane performance of more than THIRTY of Marky’s classic fan-favorite songs! These will include songs that took him from the halcyon stage of CBGB’s to touring around the world.  From the celluloid halls of Rock ‘n Roll High School to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Ramone’s career has taken him far and wide, earning him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award, and immortalizing his handprints on the Hollywood Rock Walk.

Speaking on how he chose Andrew W.K. as his singer, Ramone said:

“I first met Andrew through a mutual friend and he told me about his party philosophy, which has also always been my exact take on life.  We went into the rehearsal studio and it just clicked. We had so much fun that we wanted to invite everyone to the party. I’ve said before and I will say it again, these songs are too good not to be played live!!!”

W.K. echoed Ramone’s sentiment, saying:

“When Marky Ramone asks you to be his singer, you don’t even think about it. It’s an automatic, YES. I was intimidated by the magnitude of the opportunity – freaked out and overwhelmed – but I was also completely determined and focused – it’s something I had to do.  Even just the first rehearsal felt like an odyssey, but that’s how you can tell the experience is changing your life.  I’ve never had a more rewarding, humbling, or challenging invitation than this, and I’m serving the gods via this incredible sound Marky and his band created.  There’s never been better rock ‘n’ roll music made than this, and I will give everything I have to do it justice.”

The historic pairing will kick-off their world tour in New York City on May 3rd, 2013 at Andrew’s very own venue, Santos Party House, in downtown Manhattan. Following that show is a wealth of national and international dates, many of which appear below (with more to be confirmed shortly).

Currently, Marky Ramone hosts his own weekly satellite radio show “Punk Rock Blitzkrieg,” which is broadcast nationally via Sirius/XM Faction.  He has also entered the culinary realm with the release of his highly successful Marinara Pasta Sauce, based on his Great Grandfather’s recipe. Marky Ramone’s Marinara Pasta Sauce has wowed such mainstream media outlets as the Wall Street Journal, Food Network Magazine and the New York Post. The sauce is even served and sold at world renowned chef Daniel Boulud’s New York City restaurant, DBGB Kitchen & Bar.

Andrew W.K. has been a constant figure in national media ever since his 2000 debut, and in recent years he’s been spreading his message of positive partying and high-energy entertainment with even greater intensity.  His singular ability to straddle both mainstream media and fringe culture has made him an instantly recognizable modern pop icon.  An example of his lasting influence is the recent 10th Anniversary Deluxe release of his landmark debut album, 'I Get Wet', the world tour of which sold out dates across the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan. Most recently, Energizer Personal Care announced Andrew W.K. as the face of Playtex’s new product, Fresh + Sexy Wipes. Andrew continues to surprise, confound, and engage his audience with an expanding array of energetic and enthusiastic entertainment.

CHRIS BAILEY of The Angels passes away Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 April 2013 11:56

chrisbaileytheangels

CHRIS BAILEY, bass player with The Angels, has died after a battle with throat cancer.

Bailey, who played on six Angels albums including 'Face To Face', 'No Exit' and the band's most recent effort 'Take It To The Streets', died on Wednesday night, aged 62.

Chris began his music career in the late '60s, playing bass in his local school band before going on to co-found the notorious Adelaide based bands Red Angel Panic and Headband, of which he was lead singer. He joined The Angels in 1976, playing on the first five albums and touring constantly until 1982 when he left the band to work for a brief period in the USA. He returned to Australia to become a founding member of GANGgajang in 1984, and in between his Gang commitments became an 'in demand' session player for diverse artists playing everything from country music to celtic classics to jazz.

In late February Bailey updated fans on his condition by saying, "In July last year I got a tumour in my lower left jaw bone, which was removed and replaced with the tibia from my left leg. This was all good except every time I passed a footy field I began to dribble. Subsequently, I have developed a rare cancer of the soft palate, for which I'm currently being treated. The treatment involves chemotherapy over the next 5-6 months, and then maybe some radiotherapy. The prognosis is, well, nobody knows for sure right now which way it will go, but I'm fighting hard to stick around for some more partying."

Bailey will be farewelled by The Angels' Rick and John Brewster, and old mates Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss, at the Thebarton Theatre in Adelaide, Australia on April 17th.

Uber Rock offers its condolences to all family, friends and fans of Chris Bailey - R.I.P.

PRIMUS to release deluxe edition of 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese' Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 April 2013 11:46

primusdeluxecoverIn a restoration personally overseen by Les Claypool, PRIMUS’ acclaimed ‘Sailing The Seas Of Cheese’ has been newly mixed in stereo and Dolby 5.1 Surround for the first time since its 1991 debut for an expanded deluxe edition to be released May 20 by Universal Music Enterprises.

The deluxe edition will be available in two six-panel Digipak configurations, each featuring the album’s new stereo mix on CD and the new 5.1 surround mix on Blu-ray or DVD, plus three exclusive, previously unreleased bonus tracks, including two live recordings from Primus’ 2012 “3D Tour” and a Bassnectar Remix of “Here Come The Bastards.” The Blu-ray’s audio options also include Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround. The audio bonanza is accompanied by four visualizer video streams, previously unpublished photos from the band’s archive, and new liner notes by music journalist and author Greg Prato.

A 200-gram vinyl LP to be released on the same date also features Claypool’s new stereo mix of the album. In a “Mystery Vinyl” challenge for fans, 1000 unmarked, randomly selected copies will contain the new stereo mix on a yellow vinyl LP instead of black.

Regarding the album’s new stereo and 5.1 mixes, Claypool says, “Musically, it holds up incredibly well.  Sonically, it holds up fairly well.  There’s some old-style reverbs that are a little bit syrupy.  With modern technology, we can fix some of that stuff.  But we don’t want to mess with it too much, because it is what it is.  We want to fatten it up a little bit.”

“The way that people listen to music now - as far as stereos and headphones - you can hear so much more, so the idea of remixing it is really going to suit the way people listen to music now,” adds guitarist Larry LaLonde.

“DVD and Blu-ray offer great audiophile options for fans, but since the surround set-up in most home theater systems requires you to plant yourself in front of your telly for the full experience, why not have the option to see four different video streams with trippy looking visualizers to enhance your extracurricular activities,” says Claypool.

Released in May 1991 by then-fledgling Interscope Records, ‘Sailing The Seas Of Cheese’ was Primus’ second studio album and major label debut, featuring the singles “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver,” “Tommy The Cat” (with Tom Waits voicing “Tommy The Cat”), and “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers.”  The music videos for “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver” and “Tommy The Cat” received heavy play on MTV and the album hit #2 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, peaking at #116 on the Billboard 200.

Comprised of bassist/vocalist Claypool, guitarist LaLonde, and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander, Primus toured extensively in 1991 and 1992, including dates with Public Enemy, Anthrax, Fishbone, Rush, and U2.  ‘Sailing The Seas Of Cheese’ was certified Gold within two years, eventually climbing to Platinum in 2001.

‘Sailing The Seas Of Cheese’ is one of a handful of vital albums that ushered in the 1990s’ alternative revolution, answering slick ‘80s productions with a more irreverent - less glammy – approach to rock.  “Mainstream rock was pretty cheesy,” says Claypool.  “We were going to either sink or swim, hence ‘Sailing The Seas Of Cheese’.”

Primus has confirmed a U.S. tour of the band’s “3D” concerts. For the latest news, visit www.primusville.com

WANG CHUNG return with new album and first London show in 25 years Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 April 2013 11:37

tazerupcoverwangchung'80s pop legends WANG CHUNG will return with their first album of new material since 1989’s ‘The Warmer Side of Cool’ when they release ‘Tazer Up!’ on 3rd June, 2013. In addition, to precede the album’s release the band will perform their first live date in the UK for twenty-five years at London’s Bush Hall on Saturday, 25th May 2013.

Having formed out of the post-punk/ new wave scene, Wang Chung’s core duo of Jack Hues (vocals/guitar) and Nick Feldman (bassist/guitarist) were very much part of the 80’s British Invasion, selling millions of albums and enjoying numerous hit singles, including ‘Dance Hall Days’ and ‘Everybody Have Fun Tonight’ (a US #1) .

‘Everybody Have Fun Tonight’ unintentionally became part of the contemporary culture of North America, with its now famous line ‘Everybody Wang Chung Tonight’ becoming a new US verb, ‘to Wang Chung’, which has been namechecked by everyone from Homer Simpson to Frasier Crane (http://youtu.be/4kS_RdjLpZM) and is even established in the Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=to+wang+chung).

The band also undertook extensive movie soundtrack work, including the score of William Friedkin’s ‘To Live and Die in LA’. More recently, Wang Chung’s music has featured in contemporary TV shows and movies like The Fighter, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Glee, amongst others.

‘Tazer Up!’ (co-produced by Adam Wren of Leftfield) was released digitally in North America to widespread acclaim at the end of 2012. “It’s taken a while,” admits Wang Chung’s singer & guitarist Jack Hues. “Most of the tracks were written more recently, but the track ‘Stargazing’ was started as far back as the late-90s.”

Wang Chung bassist Nick Feldman added, “With ‘Tazer Up!’ we wanted to cut across contemporary limitations of genre and explore all the styles of music we love, from electro-pop, dance and piano ballads to Pink Floyd-esque rock. It's all there; partly looking back to the synth-pop of the '80s, but also looking forward with contemporary production. This is Wang Chung for the 21st Century.”

Speaking of the band’s first London show in twenty-five years, Feldman said, “This is a unique gig for Wang Chung. Not only is it our first London show for 25 years, we will be reunited with our original drummer Darren Costin for the first time since 1985.”

Making a special guest appearance will be Heaven 17 frontman Glen Gregory, a former member of an early incarnation of the band.

Also appearing at the Bush Hall date are the audio-visual electronic maestros Addictive TV, who recently collaborated with Wang Chung for a drum & bass remix of ‘Dance Hall Days’. “We may well attempt to play this version live,” says Hues, adding, “But don’t hold us to that!”

THE THERMALS warm up for new album with twisted video release Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 April 2013 11:33

thethermalsheader

THE THERMALS have premiered a twisted video for new single 'Born To Kill' from the forthcoming album, 'Desperate Ground'. The video is a dark, brash, and unapologetically violent two minutes of film that can be seen below.

Shot in undisclosed locations in and outside Portland OR, 'Born To Kill' is the short story of a killer getting his due - in the bloodiest of ways. Co-directed by Portland filmmaker Jeffrey Rowles and The Thermals themselves, this video is NSFW, unless you work for the CIA.

The Thermals are a post-pop-punk trio from pre-Portlandia-Portland, Oregon. The band formed in 2002 and has since released five records and toured fifteen countries.

The Thermals' sixth LP and debut for Saddle Creek, 'Desperate Ground', will be released April 15.

The album was produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth) in Hoboken, NJ. Agnello and The Thermals completed the record and evacuated the studio just hours before Hurricane Sandy ravaged New Jersey, a fate quite fitting when you consider the product. 'Desperate Ground' is a true scrappy and scratchy return-to-form for The Thermals, with all the raw power and unhinged adolescent energy that made their early LPs so insanely enjoyable. Lyrically, 'Desperate Ground' is a brash and irresponsible ode to human violence, a black celebration of the inevitability of war and death. A dark and yet joyous affair, 'Desperate Ground' tells the (murky) tale of a lone rogue in the night. One man, one path, one sword. An unceasing urge to destroy. A never-ending battle against the forces of nature. A destiny impossible to avoid.

The Thermals just completed a successful run at this year's SXSW Music festival. Billboard said, "Any sign that this ten-year-plus indie institution is ready to slow down was nowhere to be seen at a sweaty, energetic show at Spin's day party at SXSW" while The AV Club added that Thermals, "totally killed it in the baking sun." The Thermals just announced a US tour in support of 'Desperate Ground'. Look for additional shows to be announced in the coming weeks.

Louis XIV co-founder returns with THE NERVOUS WRECKORDS Print E-mail

'Let Them All Talk', the first video and title track from Brian Karscig’s (co-founder of Louis XIV) new band, The Nervous Wreckords, is a cheeky missive dedicated to all the haters. You gotta love a song that flippantly name checks Legs McNeil and gets even more acerbic from there.

Directed by Ryan Fitzgerald and starring Bekka Gunther, 'Let Them All Talk' mines the depths of self-imposed paranoia pervading the entertainment industry. Then again, Mr. Cobain famously stated some 22 years ago “Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you.”

'Let Them All Talk' debuted on Kevin Bronson’s excellent Buzzbands LA blog......but you can see it below!

'Horror Fire' from HALLOWEEN to get vinyl reissue Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 April 2013 11:18

After the vinyl re-releases of “Victims of the Night” and “No One Gets Out”, Pure Steel Records are planning to re-release the penultimate HALLOWEEN studio-album “Horror Fire” (2006) on vinyl.

The album, which was originally released on the band’s private label Motor City Metal Records, will be released as double-LP with a gatefold-cover as limited edition (500 copies).

“Horror Fire” offers typical HALLOWEEN-style music with a little more modern, fat production and Brian Thomas characteristic vocals. Its length is a bit above average (70 minutes) and was at the time of its release the longest album of the band; now topped by their current release “Terrortory”. Even though the album is quite long, there is no need for mediocre gap-fillers. With a mixture of catchy songs (“Halloween Night”), straight metal-grenades (“Candles”, “Head Against The Wall”), groovy, modern songs like “The Seer” and “Rage”, and the ALICE COOPER-coversong “Go To Hell”, they have enough good material to convince their fans even seven years after the original release. “Horror Fire” is a must for every serious HALLOWEEN-fan!

The gatefold vinyl of 'Horror Fire' will be released on May 3rd, 2013 limited to 500 pieces, 100 orange, 400 black.

MOTORTRAIN hit the road as debut full length album nears completion Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 April 2013 11:11

MOTORTRAINHEADER

Ump, guitarist and lead vocalist for Oklahoman red dirt rockers MOTORTRAIN, has been hard at work for the past few months writing and demo-ing material for the band's sophomore effort.

A road dog at heart, he's decided that it's time to take a break from being couped up and has decided to test some of his new songs in front of an audience.

"Our debut EP was fun, but it was rushed. Over the last year we've all really been diggin' deep to build this full-length album out. We didn't want to make an album just because it was time, we wanted to make one because we had something to say. Of course, when you've been stuck in the studio all winter like we have, you want to get out and stretch your legs a bit, so that's what we're gonna do. Get out, road test some new songs, and meet some new faces."

The new release, a full-length, self-titled album, is scheduled for release in late summer of 2013 and will feature songs such as "Briars and Barbed Wire", a hat-tip to the bands' state line location and the rivalries that run between them, and "Whiskey Fingers" which pays tribute to lead singer Ump's granddad, Don Schauf, who played peddle steel and fiddle up in Wichita, KS back in his day. He was in the local backing band for anyone who came through town, playing for folks like Earnest Tubb, Waylon, and Merle. Because he was stricken with Polio he never got to tour, so instead the band is taking his legacy on the road.
