New book to tell history of Finnish black metal Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 August 2017 21:00

A new book on the history of Finnish black metal is to be published in English for the first time.

‘The Devil's Cradle: The Story of Finnish Black Metal’, by Helsinki-based journalist Tero Ikäheimonen, will be issued by Svart Publishing on 1 November.

The Devils Cradle artwork

Based on more than 50 interviews conducted by Ikäheimonen between 2014 and 2017, the book unravels the story of Finnish black metal from the late 1980s and features such bands as Beherit, Impaled Nazarene, Barathrum, Archgoat, Azazel, Diaboli, Darkwoods My Betrothed, Horna, Vornat, Thy Serpent, Wanderer, Urn, Black Dawn, ...And Oceans, Musta Surma, Alghazanth, Azaghal, Warloghe, Behexen, Clandestine Blaze, Satanic Warmaster, Ride for Revenge, Goatmoon, IC Rex, Charnel Winds, Cosmic Church, Saturnian Mist, Rienaus and Abyssion.

"Countless books have been written about black metal over the years, but every time, the Finnish scene has remained merely a side note," says Ikäheimonen.

"It's an atrocity, since Finland has created some of the world's most renown underground black metal since the beginning; I wanted to fix that. This book is made for the maniacs all over the world.

"It was important for me to base the book on the experiences of true underground spirits - black metal musicians, zine authors, and tape traders," Ikäheimonen says.

"Many stories are told for the first time. I wanted to focus on the music, but not forget the darker side of black metal - all the violence, death, and destruction that have ravaged the Finnish scene. It was crucial to include the spiritual and psychological side of black metal, too. Satanism with all its different notions and the occult are present throughout the book."

‘The Devil's Cradle’ was first published in Finnish in September 2016. The English translation features all the original content and two additional chapters.

Cheese.

Tickets are available from all usual outlets. Support on all dates comes from The Lounge Kittens.

"Turbulence is one of those special songs that goes through life with me. The "bumps in the road" are different, depending on the roads... but I always have this one to come back to, to remind me that life is awesome... even the fart joke guy needs a boost from time to time."

Robert Plant - Carry Fire

His first full-length release since 2014’s ‘lullaby and...The Ceaseless Roar’, it was produced by Plant at Top Cat studio in Box, Wiltshire with additional recordings at Real World and Rockfield studios.

As with ‘lullaby and...The Ceaseless Roar’, Plant is accompanied by The Sensational Space Shifters: John Baggott on keyboards, moog, loops, percussion, drums, brass arrangement, t’bal, snare drum, slide guitar, piano, electric piano, bendir; Justin Adams on guitar, acoustic guitar, oud, E-bow quartet, percussion, snare drum, tambourine; Dave Smith on bendir, tambourine, djembe, drum kit; and Liam “Skin” Tyson on dobro, guitar, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, twelve-string.  Folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Seth Lakeman appears on three tracks and will join the band for the subsequent UK and Irish tour dates.

A number of special guests also appear on the album, with Chrissie Hynde singing the duet ‘Bluebirds Over The Mountain’ (written by rockabilly legend Ersel Hickey and later recorded by both Richie Valens and The Beach Boys) and Albanian cellist Redi Hasa performing on three tracks.

Plant says of the album:

“It’s about intention, I respect and relish my past works but each time I feel the trawl and incentive to create new work. I must mix old with new. Consequently, the whole impetus of the band has moved on its axis somewhat, the new sound and different space giving way to exciting and dramatic landscapes of mood, melody and instrumentation”.

RIP Kenny Kanowski Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 August 2017 23:03

It is with great sadness that we report the death of guitarist and songwriter Kenny Kanowski.

Kenny Kanowski

Best known as the co-writer of ‘We All Die Young’ – the lead single from the Steelheart album ‘Wait’, subsequently featured in the movie ‘Rock Star’ – the cause of his death is not known at this time.

Kanowski played guitar and co-wrote seven of the ten songs on the 1996 ‘Wait’ album. He subsequently re-united with SteelHeart last year, when he stood in with the band for the second edition of the Rockingham festival. The Über Rock crew had the great pleasure of meeting up with Kenny at that time, and spent several pleasureable hours in his company talking about his music. He had arrived ahead of the rest of the band, with no spending money, and felt guilty about scrounging a pint.  We bought him two; maybe more. He got up and jammed with the band in the pub: it was only when he nailed 'We All Die Young' we realized who we were hanging with.  It didn't matter: by then, we were all one happy gang of drinking buddies. It was mighty craic.

Writing on SteelHeart’s official Facebook page, singer Miljenko Matijevic said:

“I have truly been lost for words for days now. My brother, I have known you for over 20 years and, in that time, we have created magic. I didn't realize how deeply connected we were until now. I am so saddened by this I cannot even begin to express. Too soon Kenny, much too soon!!

“Throughout the years we have laughed, wrote amazing songs, shared the big stages throughout the world, but also sometimes didn't see eye to eye just like brothers do. However, life would always put us back together face to face and we would always accept with love and understanding and move on.

“My old friend, from the bottom of my heart, I truly wish you are at peace. laughing and looking down at us silly people running around trying to find our way through this dream to find our freedom. Our songs will live forever and I will never forget the good times as well as the challenges life has put in front of us throughout the years. Take care Kenny, I send you my love. You are free my friend, free!!!”

ALBUM NEWS: Autograph to get off their asses in October Print E-mail
Friday, 04 August 2017 14:22

LA hard rockers Autograph will release their new studio album, ‘Get Off Your Ass’, via the EMP Label Group on 6 October.

‘Get Off Your Ass’ the first official album from the revamped quartet, featuring original/founding members guitarist Steve Lynch and bassist Randy Rand alongside vocalist/rhythm guitarist Simon Daniels and drummer Marc Wieland.

Says co-founder Lynch:

“’Get Off Your Ass’ definitely sets a new direction for the band, with an updated, heavier sound, while still retaining the signature melodic hooks people have come to expect from Autograph. This record is bound to get the attention of old Autograph fans as well as the new. So put your ears on and turn this one up!!"

Adds Daniels:

“We are so excited about this record! This is a line-up of brothers with a vision and the perfect chemistry. We wanted the record to be musically timeless, and translate a heavier sound featuring the melodies and harmonies, but with heavier guitars and a more “in your face” attitude. The lyrics come from the heart and are directed to people of our current era, with uplifting messages and positive energy. It’s Autograph on steroids.”
